The wife of New York Yankees senior advisor Omar Minaya died on July 20 less than an hour after she was found unconscious in a Harrington Park, New Jersey home.
According to a July 22 statement from Bergen County prosecutor Mark Musella, at about 3:30 p.m. on July 20, officers with the Harrington Park Police Department responded to a call about an unresponsive woman found in the bathroom of a private residence.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 55-year-old Rachel Minaya unconscious and attempted to revive her. She was transported by ambulance to a Westwood hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:26 p.m.
While the circumstances surrounding Minaya’s death did not appear to be suspicious, Musella asked the Medical Examiner’s Office to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Omar Minaya, who has been with the Yankees organization since last year, previously worked as the general manager of the New York Mets from 2004 to 2010 and later served as a special assistant to other Mets general managers from 2017 to 2020.
The New York Yankees said in a July 22 statement that the team was “devastated” by the news of Rachel Minaya’s death and described her as a “loving and compassionate mother and wife.”
During last Monday’s game with the Tampa Bay Rays, Yankee Stadium led off the national anthem by first holding a moment of silence for Minaya.
Omar Minara met his late wife in 1989 while he was in a Manhattan hair salon getting a haircut, according to a 2007 profile in Sports Illustrated. The couple got engaged a year later.
In addition to Omar, Rachel Minaya is survived by her sons Teddy and Justin, who is a forward with the Portland Trail Blazers.
An investigation into Minaya’s death is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Harrington Park Police Department.
