A new genomic study reveals that the fierce, seafaring Vikings of the Iron Age looked considerably different than how the popular imagination envisions them. Far from the blonde, blue-eyed stereotype we’ve inherited, the Vikings were likely more Anatolian in appearance, given their genetic similarity to the inhabitants of modern-day Turkey.
