Trump Meets With Kevin McCarthy

(FiveNation.com)- Former President Donald Trump met with House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy at his luxury Mar-a-lago resort on Thursday where the pair put aside differences and decided to work together to win back the House of Representatives in 2022.

The GOP made huge gains off the back of President Donald Trump’s popularity in the 2020 elections, and though misconduct made it difficult for the president to maintain his position in the White House, his popularity could help give the Republican control of the House in the midterms in two years.

McCarthy, who made the shocking claim that President Trump “bears responsibility” for the violence seen on Capitol Hill on January 6, said he had a “very good and cordial” meeting with the former president. He was pictured standing next to President Trump in an image released online, perhaps intended to rally Republicans and unite the party.

Trump-supporting Save America PAC released a statement about the meeting, saying that the former president “has agreed to work with Leader McCarthy on helping the Republican Party to become a majority in the House.”

“They worked very well together in the last election and picked up at least 15 seats when most predicted it would be the opposite,” the statement continued. “They will do so again, and the work has already started.”

McCarthy released a statement following his meeting, confirming that the president was committed to building on the historic results he achieved for America.

“House Republicans and the Trump administration achieved historic results for all Americans,” he said. “We were able to do this because we listened to and understood the concerns of our fellow citizens that had long been ignored. As a result, House Republicans defied the experts and the media by expanding our growing coalition across the country.”

He confirmed that President Trump “committed to helping elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022” and that a new Republican majority will “listen to our fellow Americans and solve the challenges facing our nation.”

And while it’s good news for the Republican Party, the positivity wasn’t shared by all supporters of the president. After McCarthy claimed the president was partly responsible for the violence in Washington, D.C., high-profile supporters of the president have called for him to distance himself from the GOP establishment.

An aide close to the president and familiar with the meeting told Fox that the meeting was designed to move the GOP forward.

“They are catching up as McCarthy will be in the neighborhood,” the source said. “They’ve been on good terms for a while, and that will be important for the party moving forward.”
