(FiveNation.com)- Former President Donald Trump went after the Supreme Court after they handed down a disappointing ruling, permitting Democrats to look at his tax returns, according to Mediaite.
The president nominated three conservative justices during his term but lamented that they had lost all of their “honor, prestige, and standing” becoming “nothing more than a political body, with our Country paying the price,” adding that they refused to look at the alleged election fraud in 2020. Trump also asked whether President Biden paid his share of taxes from the illegal money he received from his son Hunter.
He took to another post on his social media platform, Truth Social, asking how the “President of the United States does not have ‘standing’ over his own election, how ridiculous?”
The release of the tax returns was temporarily blocked by Chief Justice earlier this November when the documents were requested by the House Ways and Means Committee.
Trump’s lawyers have contested the democrat-controlled committee’s request, saying that it did not stand up to scrutiny, according to NBC News. But House Democrats including the Biden administration, urged the court to deny Trump’s request, arguing instead that their need to view them reflects a legislatively valid purpose.
Democrats are praising the court’s decision, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who will lose her position in January, extolling the Supreme Court’s “commonsense decision,” saying that it “upholds our Democracy, the rule of law and the Congress’s ability to execute its legislative and oversight responsibilities.”
When the GOP regains control of the lower chamber next year, House Republicans said they will retract the committee’s request for the release of the tax returns.
The former president has fielded investigations and lawsuits since his announcement that he was running for president in 2016. After impeachments, Russia-collusion investigations, and a raid on his home in Mar-a-Lago by the FBI, the president, and his children are being sued for embezzlement in New York.
The New York attorney general filed a civil lawsuit against the former president, three of his children, and others, alleging “years of financial fraud to obtain a host of economic benefits.” Trump has denied the fraud and called the suit a politically motivated attack.
