Recall Details

Handsome Brook Farms has issued a recall for Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs due to potential Salmonella contamination. The affected eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The recall covers 10,800 packages of eggs distributed since November 22.

The eggs are packaged in plastic cartons labeled with Kirkland Signature and UPC 9661910680. Consumers should look for cartons with Julian code 327 and a “use by” date of January 5, 2025. The FDA has classified this as a ‘Class I’ recall, indicating a reasonable probability of serious health consequences or death from the product.

Health Risks and Precautions

Salmonella can cause severe and sometimes fatal symptoms, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. While no illnesses have been reported in connection with these eggs, customers are advised to take precautions.

“Consumers who bought the eggs shouldn’t eat them, and instead should return them to their local Costco store for a refund, or throw out the eggs,” the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said.

The agency also advised against using the recalled eggs for cooking or baking, even though thoroughly cooking eggs can typically prevent Salmonella.

Company Response and Consumer Actions

Handsome Brook Farms has expressed regret for the incident and implemented additional supply chain controls to prevent future occurrences. The company stated that the eggs were distributed “by mistake.” Shauna Grob, a representative for Handsome Brook Farms, provided an update on the situation:

“No illnesses have been reported at all. We have received a number of consumer calls to confirm whether the units they had in their possession were recall-able, but that has been the only interactions we have had with consumers thus far since issuing a press release and notice to Costco consumers,” she said.
