Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has been at the forefront of the investigation, working closely with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to gather crucial information.
Musk’s assistance has been instrumental in piecing together the events leading up to the explosion. He provided authorities with video footage from Tesla charging stations and details about the vehicle’s locking mechanism post-explosion. “I have to thank Elon Musk specifically,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said, noting that Tesla Motors’ CEO gave authorities “quite a bit of additional information,” including directly sending them video from its charging stations to help with their efforts to track the driver.
Cybertruck Design and Explosion Containment
The Cybertruck’s unique design, featuring a stainless-steel alloy body similar to SpaceX’s Starship rocket, played a crucial role in containing the explosion. Despite the severity of the blast, the vehicle’s structure remained largely intact, directing the force upwards and minimizing damage to surrounding areas. This unexpected benefit of the Cybertruck’s design has been highlighted by both law enforcement and Musk himself.
“The evil knuckleheads picked the wrong vehicle for a terrorist attack. Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards,” Elon Musk said.
Sheriff McMahill corroborated this assessment, stating that the Cybertruck’s design limited the damage to the valet area of the Trump International Hotel. Remarkably, the front glass doors of the hotel remained unbroken despite the vehicle being parked directly in front of them.
FBI Involvement and Potential Terrorism Links
The FBI has joined the investigation, exploring potential connections to terrorist activities. The Cybertruck’s cargo bed contained gasoline canisters, fuel canisters, and large fireworks, which were detonated by a device controlled by the driver. This discovery has raised concerns about the possibility of a planned attack.
Adding to the complexity of the case, authorities are investigating possible links to a separate attack in New Orleans that occurred hours earlier, where a driver killed at least 15 people. Both vehicles involved in these incidents were rented through the Turo app, prompting a closer examination of potential coordinated efforts.
“We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself,” Musk said in a post on X. “All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion,” Musk added, referring to the automaker’s system that collects and transmits data about a vehicle’s performance and status in real time and can monitor mileage and track the distance traveled, among other features.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to identify the driver, with early indications suggesting a possible military background. The collaborative efforts between local law enforcement, federal agencies, and private sector companies like Tesla and Turo underscore the complex nature of this ongoing investigation into what appears to be a deliberate act of violence.
