Sacramento Shooting Leaves One Person Dead, Another Injured

Sacramento Police Department has released details about a shooting in the city that left one person dead and another injured. The incident took place early on the morning of July 20 in Midtown. Reports indicate that one man was found with a gunshot wound on 20th Street, while another made his way to the hospital. One of the men died later that same day, and the other is currently in stable condition.

Police did not locate a suspect and appealed to the public for help as homicide detectives took control of the case. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with one saying he heard shouts of “he’s shot” before around 30 police cars arrived. Another witness said he saw “people hiding behind buildings” before noticing a man lying on the sidewalk in a pool of blood.

The incident happened against a background of excessive violence in the Californian capital this summer. In June, for example, police reported four shootings in the city in the space of just 24 hours. On June 23, one man died near Del Paso Boulevard, and police detained two minors for the killing: prosecutors charged them with murder and robbery.

Just hours earlier and a little over a mile away, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office attended the scene of another shooting, although this one was not fatal. In yet another incident, a man was found shot in his car the same weekend. His injuries were also non-life threatening.

The fourth shooting took place on Sunday afternoon, June 23, near Vallejo Way in Upper Land Park, and the victim died on Monday in a local hospital.

Meanwhile, 51-year-old Urberto Dotson walked into the police station and admitted to shooting a woman who was discovered dead in her apartment on July 8. Dotson has been charged with homicide and is currently being held in a Sacramento jail.

Despite a series of violent crimes in Sacramento during June and July, overall crime in the city has actually been decreasing. The number of homicides has been steadily declining over the past few years, with 113 cases in 2021, 110 in 2022, and just 87 last year.
