(FiveNation.com)- Many people in Washington believe that President Joe Biden isn’t supporting Israel enough in the recent escalating tensions with Palestine.
However, there’s at least one member of his own party who thinks the president has done too much.
New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the most progressive members of Congress, criticized her party’s leader on Wednesday for “taking the side of occupation.” AOC’s comments came not long after Biden said he recently spoke with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel.
Earlier in the day, Biden told reporters:
“My expectation and hope is that this will be closing down sooner than later, but Israel has a right to defend itself when you have thousands of rockets flying into your territory.”
AOC, though, believes Biden’s comments don’t recognize that Israel’s past actions led to the attacks by Palestinians. She went as far as to say that Biden’s remarks imply “the U.S. will look the other way at human rights violations.”
She took to Twitter to make her comments, writing:
“Blanket statements like these [with] little context or acknowledgement of what precipitated this cycle of violence — namely, the expulsions of Palestinians and attacks on Al Aqsa — dehumanize Palestinians & imply the US will look the other way at human rights violations. It’s wrong.
“By only stepping in to name Hamas’ actions — which are condemnable — & refusing to acknowledge the rights of Palestinians, Biden reinforces the false idea that Palestinians instigated this cycle of violence. This is not neutral language. It takes a side — the side of occupation.”
Over the last few weeks, tensions in the contested area have escalated substantially. It started when a court ruled that several Palestinian families could be evicted from their homes in one neighborhood in east Jerusalem. Police then placed restrictions on a popular gathering place during Ramadan, which is the holy month for Muslims.
Then, Israeli police raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In that incident, hundreds of people were injured, and worshippers fled the area.
The response by Hamas — the militant group that rules the Palestinians in the region — was to fire rockets into Israel. There were so many rockets fired into Israel that they overwhelmed their defense system known as the Iron Dome.
AOC, and so many of her other cronies in “The Squad,” is so misguided in this debate, though. She would be quick to cite an Al Jazeera report the recent incidents resulted in 56 Palestinians being killed, with 14 being children, and another 335 being injured. On the flip side, Hamas killed six people in Israel with their attacks, and another 100 were injured.
The problem with that straight numerical comparison, though, is that it completely ignores the fact that the United States consider Hamas to be a terrorist organization.
In other words, by saying Biden is supporting Israel over Palestine, AOC is suggesting that the United States president is ignoring the rights of a terrorist organization. That doesn’t seem too logical, does it?
