(FiveNation.com)- Democratic Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer, who famously stopped residents of her state from purchasing anything other than she believed were “essentials” during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, has finally been stripped of her emergency powers by Republican legislators.
Whitmer, who was slammed as a hypocrite after it was revealed her husband had tried to leverage her position in state politics to get his boat out onto the water during the first round of lockdowns, was stripped of her powers in a 60-48 vote in the state House of Representatives on Wednesday.
The state governor had been granted the powers by the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945, which allowed her to issue emergency declarations that she claimed protected life and property. Under the rules, the people of Michigan were banned from buying anything other than food, water, and bare essentials at supermarkets. Residents were not even permitted to purchase gardening equipment to work on their yards while the lockdown was in place.
The state Senate, which is also controlled by the Republicans, voted 20-15 to strip Whitmer of her powers.
It follows a ruling from the Michigan Supreme Court in October last year that the law was unconstitutional and Whitmer should never have been granted the powers in the first place.
Whitmer will not be able to veto the new law taking away her powers as it comes as a result of a campaign initiated by Michigan residents. The campaign was organized by “Unlock Michigan,” and the campaign group’s spokesperson Fred Wszolek said that they are grateful for the state legislature who “stood with the people of Michigan” and for repealing the “misguided 1945 law” that has caused so much pain for the people of their state.
Now we’ll have to wait and see what kind of pain Whitmer tries to inflict without the powers she has relied on since last year.
