Joe Manchin Walks Away From Democrat’s Gas Stove Plan

(FiveNation.com)- Democratic Senator Joe Manchin broke with some in his party when he turned his back on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s plan to ban gas stoves, according to The Daily Wire. The commission cited health concerns for its ban, but Manchin reportedly said that that is a terrible idea, saying that he will not give up the stove his family uses to cook with, and neither will other Americans.

“This is a recipe for disaster. The federal government has no business telling American families how to cook their dinner. I can tell you the last thing that would ever leave my house is the gas stove that we cook on,” Manchin tweeted last week, citing an article from Bloomberg. The West Virginia senator suggested that if this was the concern of the commission, it needs to be reevaluated.

Other Democrats were less critical than Manchin, instead jumping on board with the idea. Far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended the report and linked gas stoves to “reduced cognitive performance.”

Twitter users were quick to lambast the New York Democrat, with one user replying with a picture of First Lady Jill Biden using a gas stove to cook her food. Another user posted a picture of AOC where her gas stove is visible.

CNN’s Bill Weir also linked gas stoves to cognitive performance, saying that if a home is poorly ventilated, using a gas stove is like having a car sit idle. He added that children can get asthma.

On the other hand, electric stoves are also harmful, according to a 2020 report from the National Fire Protection Association. The report says that the stoves are tied to higher injury (nearly 5x), death (3.4x), and house fires (2.6x).

After public backlash, the CPSC reassured that it is not seeking a gas stove ban but looking at how to reduce emissions and make stoves safe for use.
