The family of famed ballerina Michaela DePrince has been hit with a double tragedy, as her mother, Elaine “Mamma E” DePrince, passed away just one day after Michaela’s sudden death at the age of 29. Elaine died on Wednesday, September 11, during a routine procedure for an upcoming surgery, according to family spokesperson Jessica Volinski.
The shocking news came after Michaela, a renowned ballerina who inspired many with her story of overcoming adversity, passed away unexpectedly on September 10. In a heartbreaking twist, Elaine was unaware of Michaela’s death before her own passing.
Volinski shared the family’s devastation in a Facebook post, stating, “As unbelievable as it may seem, the two deaths were completely unrelated… Elaine, who had already lost three children many years ago, was by the grace of God spared the pain of experiencing the loss of a fourth child.”
The family is grieving both losses, which Volinski described as “tragic and devastating.” The post also asked for privacy as the family copes with the unimaginable pain of losing two beloved members within such a short time.
Michaela DePrince, who was born in Sierra Leone as Mabinty Mangura, was adopted by Elaine and Charles DePrince at the age of four. She rose to international fame for her talent in ballet, starring in Beyoncé’s Lemonade music video and appearing on Dancing with the Stars at just 17 years old.
Michaela’s family has not yet provided a cause of death, but tributes have poured in for the ballerina, whose “artistry touched countless hearts,” as her spokesperson said. DePrince was also a committed humanitarian, serving as an Ambassador for War Child Holland, helping children in war-torn countries.
Elaine DePrince had been a pillar of support for Michaela, raising her alongside 10 other children, nine of whom were adopted. Elaine’s death marks another profound loss for the family, who have endured immense heartbreak in recent days.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to War Child, the organization Michaela passionately supported.
Michaela’s sister paid tribute to her on Instagram, recalling fond memories of their time together in an African orphanage and their shared dream of ballet. The post expressed deep sadness at the loss of a “beautiful, gracefully strong ballerina.”
