(FiveNation.com)- Many Democrats are not happy that moderate Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia said he wouldn’t support the Build Back Better Act.
One of the most outspoken in the few days since Manchin made that announcement is none other than progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York.
Following Manchin’s announcement, AOC went on a war path, going off on President Joe Biden — the leader of her party — for not being able to get the job done.
On Sunday, she tweeted:
“The fact that Biden has the power to provide student debt relief to millions, had to be forced into extending the eviction moratorium, & has yet to aggressively campaign against the filibuster shows us he has more power than he’s using. It’s time to take off the gloves & govern.”
In other words, AOC wants Biden to not actually work with all sides of the issue; she just wants him to bow to her demands and those of the progressive wing of the party and do whatever he wants to do.
Her tweet continued:
“Biden needs to lean on his executive authority now. He has been delaying and underutilizing it so far. There is an enormous amount he can do on climate, student debt, immigration, cannabis, health care, and more. Time is running out — we need to move and use alternative paths.”
AOC has her facts dead wrong here. Biden has been using his powers to issue executive orders at an historic pace. In fact, he’s on pace to issue more executive orders on an annual basis than any president since Harry Truman was in the White House.
The progressive representative’s attacks weren’t just relegated to the president, though. She also went off on Manchin. She tweeted that she knew “months ago” that the West Virginia senator would eventually come out against the BBB. She explained:
“Where we need answers from the leaders who promised a path on [Build Back Better] if [the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework] passed: Biden & Dem leaders. They chose to move BIF alone instead of w/BBB, not Manchin. So they need to fix it.
“Maybe they’ll believe us next time. Or maybe people will just keep calling us naïve. Either way, we cannot accept no for an answer. Dem leadership — incl but not limited to the President himself and House Dem leadership — wrote a massive check on their credibility the night of BIF vote in order to secure the votes they needed, *promising* passage of BBB.”
AOC often speaks this way, acting as if she has more power in Washington than she actually has. She and her cohorts in “The Squad” certainly do make a lot of noise, and at times, Biden and other Democratic leaders have joined their progressive movement.
But, it’ll be interesting to see whether Democratic leadership caves to her demands and outrageous claims, or whether the establishment rules the day in the end.
