(FiveNation.com)- A new suggestion has been made for a Speaker of the House who is notorious to many on both sides.
The speaker of the Democratic majority at the moment is Nancy Pelosi. Before the election, Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was frequently mentioned as a strong candidate for speaker if the Republicans won the House in the red wave that didn’t quite happen.
After Jennifer Rubin, a journalist for The Washington Post, tweeted her support, the idea of outgoing Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney serving as speaker gained traction on social media. Cheney, one of just two Republicans serving on the House committee looking into what happened on January 6, 2021, has harshly criticized former President Donald Trump.
“I’m sold, OK. For Speaker, Liz Cheney,” Rubin penned.
John Dean, a CNN commentator and former White House advisor under Richard Nixon, gave it his seal of approval.
“WaPo columnist Jennifer Rubin recommended the Democrats choose Liz Cheney as speaker if the GOP takes control of the House. In many respects, this is a brilliant idea,” he tweeted.
Democratic candidate Zack Czajkowski, who worked on former President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign, provided a special justification for why Cheney was qualified.
Czajkowski asked why not Liz Cheney as the House Speaker in transition. He said both Democrats and Republicans would be furious about it. He said she is a competent adult with a conservative voting history, a track record of collaborating across party lines, and—most importantly—unwavering moral fortitude under duress.
But the idea quickly came under attack from both the right and the left, and the bubble soon popped.
Liz Cheney won’t hold the speakership, I repeat. She is looking for work, but she won’t land that position. Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted, “Any Republican who would vote for Liz Cheney would be backing for Biden’s agenda.
Despite the fact that a member of the House usually serves as speaker, anyone from outside of Congress is eligible to hold the position. It has been suggested that Trump might possibly be selected due to this restriction.
